I understand the Government is currently considering 50 recommendations from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) review that will reform the PBS.
 
While you consider these recommendations and funding for the much-needed reforms in the Federal Budget, please remember eleven-year-old Canberran Millie and her mother, Sally-Anne.
 
Millie was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis through the newborn heel prick screening program in 2014. Millie began a blind trial at 5 months of age and continued the antibiotics for the first four years of her life. 
 
Thankfully, over recent years, new therapies that treat both the symptoms and causes of cystic fibrosis have emerged. 
 
After health regulators first approved Millie’s medication in March 2021, she waited another year for it to be listed on the PBS, only to find out that it was only available for children aged 12 and above. Millie then had to wait another year before her age group (between 6 and 11 years) could access the medication.
 
As Millie’s mum explains, "For a mother, it’s like torture. The mental load, fatigue and anxiety are enormous. All the while, we were doing everything in our power to keep the stress from Millie, who had enough on her plate."
 
Millie is doing well, but the fight for a stronger PBS continues to be at the forefront of her mum's mind. Sally-Anne has become aware of another medicine that will be even better for Millie but is not yet listed on the PBS.
 
Millie, and other children like her, cannot afford to wait for time consuming and bureaucratic processes.
 
Please support funding for the HTA Review’s recommendations in next year’s budget. These recommendations will speed up the process by which TGA approved medicines are listed on the PBS, which will support children like Millie, who have already waited too long to access the best available medicines.
