I have been reading about Maria, a Brisbane based mum and breast cancer survivor.

Maria, like so many others, had to endure her chemo while worrying whether the medicine she needed would be available on the PBS when she needed it. 

To be effective, her medicine needed to be taken at the end of the chemo treatment. While undergoing chemo and enduring its emotional and physical side effects, Maria was caring for her children and making plans to access the medicine overseas, where it was more affordable, even after the cost of travel. 

In the end, the medicine was listed on the PBS just in time for Maria—but it took around two years, even after the TGA deemed it safe and effective.

There are so many women who are still waiting and hoping for the medicine they need to be accessible and affordable on the PBS.

We know the Government is considering 50 recommendations from the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Review. The recommendations on ways to get faster access to medicines for patients would have helped Maria and would most certainly help many other Australian women who are still waiting.

We ask you to support funding reform in the next federal budget so patients can access new, life-changing medicines sooner. Take action on the HTA Review and create a Stronger PBS that is faster, fairer and fit for the future. Your support will make a difference for many Australian women and their families.
